Umut Azad Akkel (*1991 Izmir/Turkey) is a visual artist living and working between Berlin and Turkey.
Currently, his works deal with (migrant) identity, space-body-politics in public space and urban transformations, especially the one between big cities and their inhabitants and whereby focusing on intersections/overlap of these themes.
Akkel works in a wide variety of disciplines and media, with the material becoming the object of research and thus co-determining the concept. In the conceptual work process, new media are added, creating a thought cycle between material and concept.
That's how Akkel combines objects, sculptures, drawings and writings with performances and video works among others.
Another important part of Umut Azad Akkel's artistic work are his own-initiative curating events and seminars on topics of cultural and political identity (such as 'Fava Connection' and 'Iran 101'). He is also one of the co-founders of the initiative I.D.A. (Intersectionality/Diversity/Antidiscrimination) and he is a member of the Soltity Collective (Fine Art Experimental Group) and the BBK Berlin.
In 2020 Umut Azad Akkel was awarded the DAAD Prize for International Students. In 2021 he was awarded the Playground Art Prize (2nd place).
Since 2016 he studies at the Berlin University of the Arts in the class of Prof. Ina Weber. 2010-2015 he studied product design in Istanbul/Turkey.
