Geduld

Geduld is about my critical relationship with Berlin and the “survival” practices of non-German individuals in Berlin. The work addresses the contradictory dynamics of Berlin, its urban narratives and the practice of belongingness of its residents. The work is a participatory installation in a public space accompanied by two videos shown from an object that refers to the creating process of the work. The title Geduld comes from my sensual experience during my immigration process in Berlin.

The installation is made by construction fences which are arranged into a labyrinth. The labyrinth of the fences refers to my visual imagining of Berlin.

Different from usual labyrinths, Geduld has see-through walls. By using the fence walls, I play with the situation of being able to see the potential goal, place and point but still not being able to know how to reach it.

The installation includes two participatory objects. With the objects, I refer to the contradictions of Berlin’s general structures.

Object I (small tower): Offers a “private” space for resting and observing the installation. If you are tired or even unable to go up, it would not be possible to access the object and its offers.

Object II (exchange point): Through the self-made fence has plexiglass in the middle; the object offers the audience an exchange place with other individuals who possibly have different backgrounds.

The form of the object is coming from the cabinets of the security cameras’ screens in Berliner underground station.
